Advanced Specialist Diploma in Supervision

(Level 6 Equivalent)

January 2025 Start (Fortnightly Monday)

The next step for many counsellors and psychotherapists is training to become supervisors. Supervising other counsellors involves combining your knowledge and experience as a therapist with relevant supervision theories and practices. It is important to bring your personality, intuition, and creativity to your supervisor role to make it a wholesome and rewarding experience for you and your supervisees. Our Advanced Specialist Diploma in Supervision will draw on the skills and knowledge you have gained as a therapist and use them as the foundations on which to build your new role as a supervisor.

Over 14 taught sessions, the course will equip you to support your supervisees through the many challenges that may emerge in their counselling practice and to explore the relationships that come into the therapy room with creativity and professionalism. The learning consists of taught lessons and discussions, as well as a strong emphasis on experiential work, so there will be plenty of opportunity to practice what you have learnt and experiment with it in a safe and held environment with your peers and tutors.
To begin, you will explore who you are as a counsellor/psychotherapist and how you are evolving into a supervisor. We will also explore how you want to market yourself as a supervisor to get the supervisees you wish to.

Throughout the diploma, you will learn about various models of supervision, with a focus on The Seven-Eyed Supervision model developed by Peter Hawkins and Robin Shohet. We will explore ethics and how to manage ethical dilemmas which supervisees will inevitably bring to supervision. You will be taught how to run a supervision group and be given the opportunity to practice this with your peers.

The course will also look at using Gestalt techniques in supervision, working online with supervisees, taking supervision outdoors, the transpersonal in supervision and much more.
We feel that the creative element of supervision is important, but this doesn’t just mean painting and drawing (although the course does incorporate this too!) We believe it is essential to think creatively and resourcefully as a supervisor. With this in mind, there is a strong focus on encouraging you to think independently and courageously.

To qualify, you will also complete 18 hours of supervision with at least three different supervisees (you have up to one year after the end of the taught course to complete these hours). You will also need to receive supervision for these supervision hours.

Our Advanced Specialist Diploma in Supervision will provide you with the relevant theoretical base and practical skills to enable you to be an effective, professional supervisor. At the same time, we will actively encourage you to develop your style and bring your personality to your new role.

The course is aimed at counsellors and psychotherapists with sufficient experience to take on the role of a clinical supervisor, either as a lead counsellor in an agency, charity, organisation, or private practice. This means that students must be three years post counselling diploma qualification* and have obtained 450 hours or more of supervised counselling practice.

*Please note after we have received your application, we will ask you to submit copies of your counselling/psychotherapy diploma.
