This course is the perfect opportunity for you to see if counselling feels like a good fit for you as you learn and try out the skills involved. Over ten, three hour sessions we will introduce you to some of the ideas in counselling theory and practice, and provide an introduction to important communication skills, self-care and self-development. 

About this course

The pace and content of the course are ideal for students who are new to counselling or have not been in a formal education setting for many years; it is also appropriate for learners wishing to endorse their counselling skills with a recognised qualification, as the first step towards becoming a professional counsellor, or for those just wishing to improve their self-confidence and inter-personal skills.

This level 2 qualification can be used as a progression route towards the SEG Awards ABC Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills or to simply enhance your listening skills as part of your own personal or professional development. The valuable communication skills learned on the course are transferable to a range of career and educational opportunities.

Aims and Objectives

Aims: This course aims to enhance your verbal and written communication skills and to introduce you to the theory of listening and responding in a helping relationship.

The objectives of this qualification are to help you to:

  • Develop a basic understanding of what counselling is about and be able to compare and contrast counselling with other forms of helping activities
  • Develop an understanding of what counselling training entails and assist you to make a more informed choice as to whether or not you are suited to undertake vocational counselling training as opposed to other types of training
  • Introduce you to experiential learning processes that will include a high element of personal growth work, developing further self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Prepare you to progress onto appropriate further qualifications

Structure and Content of the Qualification

The course is delivered in three sections

The Professional Context of Counselling

This unit provides a basic introduction to counselling. You will develop an understanding of what counselling is, and an appreciation that qualified counsellors and those who use counselling skills abide by an ethical framework. You will learn about the importance of creating the correct environment and the right ethos for the helping relationship to be successful.

Communication Skills in Helping Relationships

In this unit, you will explore effective communication skills used in helping relationships. You will demonstrate a range of listening and responding skills to establish and develop close interactions with others.

An Introduction to Personal Development

In this unit, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your personal development and identify areas for development in the future.


  •       Your work is measured against specific criteria set out by ABC Awards
  •       Individual tutor written and verbal feedback
  •       Internal and external assessment/moderation of written work

All three units must be passed to successfully achieve the qualification. We are always happy to give you any necessary assistance and guidance with course work and writing presentation.

In addition to counselling skills development and the exploration of Person Centred, Gestalt and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, you will begin to understand and apply the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework, in addition to gaining an understanding of counselling supervision and issues of diversity within today’s society.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification.

Entry is at the discretion of Devon Counselling College and applicants should aged 19 or above and be able to satisfy us of their suitability for this level of learning and personal development.

Assessment methods

This qualification is internally assessed and internally and externally quality assured. Assessment methods are varied and consist of weekly written and verbal assignments. Personal exploration is an essential part of this course and you will document your development by use of a personal reflective journal.

At the start of the course you will be given a learner handbook which sets out in detail all the information you need to successfully complete your qualification. You need to be able to commit to the 80% attendance requirement on this course.

This qualification does not qualify learners to practise as a counsellor.

This is not just a training course where you learn the skills and theory required to obtain the qualification; it will encourage you to draw on and use your own individual life experience and develop your own special way of working therapeutically with clients. You really get to know who YOU are.

Early Payment Fee £300
Pay £100 deposit to secure your place on the course, followed by one payment of £200 made by BACS prior to course start date.

Option 2
Course Fee £350
Pay £100 deposit to secure your place on the course, followed by 2 monthly standing order payments of £125.
